Nelson County, Kentucky

Nelson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population was 37,477. Its county seat is Bardstown6. The county is named for Thomas Nelson, Jr. a Virginia Governor who signed the Declaration of Independence. The county is part of the Louisville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,098 km² (424 mi²). 1,095 km² (423 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it (0.34%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 37,477 people, 13,953 households, and 10,269 families residing in the county. The population density was 34/km² (89/mi²). There were 14,934 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 92.84% White, 5.51% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 13,953 households out of which 38.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% were married couples living together, 12.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% were non-families. 22.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.08.
The age distribution is 27.70% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $39,010, and the median income for a family was $44,600. Males had a median income of $32,015 versus $21,838 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,120. About 10.00% of families and 12.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.70% of those under age 18 and 17.40% of those age 65 or over.
