Nello Pagani

Nello Pagani (born Milan, October 11, 1911 - died Bresso, October 18, 2003) was an Italian Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and Formula One driver. He was known for his long career (from 1928 to 1955) and for becoming the first 125cc World Champion in 1949. Nello almost became a double Champion in that 1st year of the World Championship series. In the 500cc class he was officially 2nd. The series was run over 6 rounds with a riders best 3 scores to count. Englishman Les Graham on an AJS "Porcupine" twin, so called because of the spiky fins on the engine & cylinder barrel. However Pagani scored more overall points than Graham but lost the championship with 2 wins & a 3rd as his scores that counted whilst Graham had 2 wins & a second. In Formula One he participated in one Grand Prix, debuting on June 4, 1950. He scored no championship points, and came in seventh place. Incidenly the Motorcycle World Championships preceeded that for cars (Formula 1) by 1 year
