Robert Neil Harvey (born October 8, 1928 in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria) is a former Australian cricketer.
An outstanding, attacking left-handed batsman, brilliant fielder and useful off-spin bowler, Harvey enjoyed a sixteen year first-class career spanning from 1946 to 1963.
Within two years of his Victorian first-class debut, Harvey was in the Australian national team, making his Test debut against India in Adelaide, January 23, 1948. In just his second Test match he scored a century, 153 against India, making him the youngest Australian to score a Test century, beating out Archie Jackson.
The opening period of his Australian career was particularly fruitful, scoring six centuries in his first thirteen Test innings, a record made all the better considering he was only twenty and twenty-one years old at the time.
Harvey would go on to play 79 Test matches for Australia, ending with 6,149 runs at an average of 48.41. His top score was a masterful 205 against South Africa in Melbourne in the 1952-1953 season, and he was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1954.
Harvey captained Australia in the second Test of the 1961 Ashes series in England, guiding Australia to a five-wicket victory as they went on to claim the series 2-1.
His first-class record was even more impressive, 21,699 runs amassed over 306 matches for Australia, Victoria and New South Wales at the average of 50.93, which is considered outstanding in any era of cricket.
After retiring from first-class cricket he became a national team selector for twelve years. He was named and inaugurated into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2000, and also selected in the Australian Cricket Board's official Test Team of the Century.
Harvey's older brother, Merv, also played Test cricket.
