Nedelišće is a settlement in Međimurje County, in northern Croatia. It is the second most populated place in the county, but is currently not designated neither as a city nor a town. Its population was estimated at 4,430 in the 2001 census.

Nedelišće is located right next to western skirts of Međimurje's county seat Čakovec, about two kilometres from the city's centre. It is also the seat of a municipality that consists of 10 other settlements and today has a population of approximately 11,500. Other settlements in the municipality are Črečan, Dunjkovec, Gornji Hrašćan, Gornji Kuršanec, Macinec, Parag, Pretetinec, Pušćine, Slakovec and Trnovec.

[edit] History

Nedelišće was first mentioned in 1226, in the Donation of Hungarian king Bela IV. The settlement gained its name by Sunday (Croatian: nedjelja, local Kajkavian dialect: nedelja or nedela) since the local people worship The Holy Trinity to which their Catholic parish is dedicated. In the medieval times the place has developed into a market consisting of fairs and crafts. Between 1570 and 1586 Nedelišće was also the seat of one of the first Croatian printing offices. The first document about the establishment of a local school originates from 1660, when Međimurje was reigned by the Zrinski family. The local voluntary fire department was founded in 1908 and is the oldest in the municipality.

[edit] Today

Nedelišće is the centre of a municipality that also encompasses a total of 10 surrounding settlements. The main international road going through the centre of Nedelišće is the traffic connection between Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia. Nedelišće is also known as the host of some manifestations like the county's annual business fair MESAP (Croatian: Međimurski sajam poduzetništva) that takes place in June at the local football field and gathers various companies from all over the county. Local sports teams include the football club NK Nedelišće from the Croatian Third League and the volleyball club OK Nedelišće from the Second Croatian Volleyball League.
