From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nebraska B.E.A.R.S were a professional American football team located in Omaha, Nebraska. The B.E.A.R.S competed outdoors in the North American Football League (NAFL), and in 2005 became a member of the indoor American Professional Football League.
The B.E.A.R.S program started out in the fall of 1990 as a Pop Warner team called the North Omaha B.E.A.R.S. The goal was to create a positive environment for youth through an urban community based football team. Hence, the acronym for B.E.A.R.S (Building Esteem And Responsibility Systematically).
In their first five years of professional existence, the B.E.A.R.S dominated the NAFL, winning five consecutive division titles from 2000-2004. Following the 2005 APFL and NAFL seasons the organization ceased operations due to lack of funding, putting the future of the team in limbo.
Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green is the B.E.A.R.S' most notible alumnus.
The B.E.A.R.S were owned by Michael Carter and coached by Don Moore and former Nebraska Cornhuskers great Abdul Muhammad.
