NCAA Division II independent schools

NCAA Division II independent schools are four-year institutions that field intercollegiate teams in football and other sports, but which are not formally affiliated with any athletic conference.

- Brevard College
- Central State University¹
- Chowan University
- Dixie State College - Joining Pacific West Conference in 2007 for sports other than football.
- Humboldt State University - football only, all other sports participate in California Collegiate Athletic Association.
- North Greenville University (South Carolina)
- Oklahoma Panhandle State University - football only, all other sports participate in Heartland Conference.
- Quincy University - While technically a Division II member, participates as a member of the NAIA.
- Tiffin University¹
- Western Oregon University - football only, all other sports particapate in Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
¹ - These schools, while technically independent, are members of the Great Lakes Football Conference.

There are some teams that are still listed as Division II teams, but are in the process of transitioning to Division I Championship Subdivision or Division III.
- California-Davis - Transitioning to Division I Championship Subdivision (D-IAA). Member of Great West Football Conference.
- University of Minnesota, Morris - Transitioning to Division III. Member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
- University of North Carolina at Pembroke - Starting football for 2007.
- North Dakota State University - Transitioning to Division I Championship Subdivision (D-IAA). Member of Great West Football Conference.
- South Dakota State University - Transitioning to Division I Championship Subdivision (D-IAA). Member of Great West Football Conference.
