Naylor Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by Astronomical Society of Harrisburg. It is located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (USA).
[edit] History
Astronomical Society of Harrisburg was formed in 1955. One of its goals was to construct an observatory. First the members constructed a 12.5" Cassegrain telescope to place in the observatory, then they attempted to purchase a plot of land for $1000 dollars. This plot of land was then discovered to be adjacent to a night club, and the money was refunded.
The society learned a valuable lesson and planned the observatory out more accurately. The present property was acquired in 1966. Since the society had not had an established history, even with 60 members, acquiring funding for the construction became an issue. The society spent the next 5 years, ending in 1971, raising the money for the observatory.
The club prevailed and expanded completing the dome in 1977 and expanding in 1979. A donated 12.5" Cave Newtonian Telescope was installed, as well as other telescopes. Recently, with the club's membership growing large, an addition to the observatory in the form of a CCD Observatory is planned.
