The Navy League of Canada created the Navy League Cadet Corps (or Corps de cadets de la Ligue navale) for young boys in 1948, and the Navy League Wrennettes[1] for girls in 1950. There are no longer any Wrennettes in existence in Canada, and the Navy League Cadet Corps are now open for boys and girls between the ages of 9 to 12.

The Navy League Cadet Programme is not part of the Canadian Cadet Movement and is not sponsored by the Department of National Defence, as opposed to the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. Therefore, the total responsibility of the Navy League Cadet Programme is in the hand of Navy League Officers and local branches of the Navy League of Canada. Both officers and branch members are volunteers, who willingly give their time towards this programme.

The training programme of the Navy League Cadets is based on that of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, however, modified to serve the needs of this age group.
