Navaratna (a Sanskrit bahuvrihi "having nine gems") is a talisman set with nine gems. In Hindu astrology, earth is considered the centre of universe and the nine planets were the navagrahas and each of these planetary position is supposed to influence and chart an individual's course of life, hence wearing each of these nine gems either as locket in neck chain or as a gem in the ring would provide the required benefit. The influence of these gems on the human life has both positive and negative and should be weared after consulting an astrologer. Symbolically, they represent the planets (typically ruby: Sun, diamond: Venus, pearl: Moon, coral: Mars, hessonite: ascending lunar node, blue sapphire: Saturn, cat's eye: descending lunar node, yellow sapphire: Jupiter, tsavorite: Mercury) [1] Based on individual's horoscope, either a single gem or a combination of these is advised.
