Talk:National mysticism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Welcome to the "National Mysticism" page!
I created this page after having heard or read some hard-to-take-seriously claims, ideas and opinions especially about my country and people (I'm Greek, but that doesn't mean I automatically accept any ideas of "past greatness", quite the opposite) and a few other cases, most notably Albanian people. Again, I heard most of these claims from Albanian friends of mine and I was even shown a printed book about the "30 Albanians emperors of Rome", for example.
Anyway, I thought that the argument could draw some interest, although I couldn't come up with a better title regarding it, ignoring if there is a specific term for this kind of ideas.
Since the page is very young and the examples a bit too scarce (although, I think, they go straight the their point) I'd appreciate anyone to contribute and criticize.
So far, only a comment regarding the ancient Greek "mechanically rotating temples" (see page history) has been removed, claiming that their existence is confirmed. That would be cool and it would be cooler if some sort of internal or external reference could be provided . The article on Hero of Alexandria, mentioned in the edit comment is anything but complete at the moment.
- Every culture does this, singling out Albanians is POV (see the WP:NPOV policy). As far as the emperors go, those claims are in fact about Illyrian emperors, and since Albanians are descendent from Illyrians, people claim that they were Albanian. Dori | Talk 04:18, May 6, 2004 (UTC)
- Cool by me... I created this article mainly because I wanted some light shaded over these "phenomena". Now, I know of many other examples of "Greek"
National Mysticism, most of them hilarious... I also threw in those few "Albanian" examples I knew. Now, some of them as I said were reported to me by Albanian friends, such as Kemal Atatürk's Albanian Origins. Now I did some research on that and, well, it all depends on what one means as "origins" as he was born in Greece (independent by the Ottoman Empire by then) but his mother was of Albanian origins (though she lived in a Greek village close to the Albanian Borders of the time) and the father's origins are still a mystery, that's as much as I could gather. Alexander The Great on the other hand is a very disputed personality for other reasons including FYROM nationalism etc. Please, do not think that I'm biased against Albanians. - Explaining that would go a long ways towards NPOV, as well as what I said about the emperors, and including examples from other nationalities. This doesn't just go for Albanians. We have to be very careful with the whole article, about any nationality. That's just how NPOV works. I don't know enough about the topic to fix this myself, but the entire article is POV in my opinion. We should be describing what it is, not convince others that the beliefs and expressions of other nationalities are wrong. It's a very thin line, and we have to make sure we don't cross it. I'll link this article to Cleanup and see if someone can NPOV it. Dori | Talk 12:42, May 10, 2004 (UTC)
This is a truly crappy Wikipedia article. :-/
If you know any ways to improve it then, feel free to edit it. EpiVictor 10:11, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)
