Natural Desktop
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Natural Desktop is a piece of software for Windows XP created by Stardock that is designed to recreate the environment outside, inside. To do this, Natural Desktop employs detailed animations of weather states, wallpapers by Digital Blasphemy and optional background sounds (e.g. chirping birds and crickets) — sounds change with the time of day, and the wallpapers change with the season as well.
The Natural Desktop takes XML and METAR/TAF data feeds from NOAA to create a comprehensive picture of the weather at a particular location, and to forecast for five days in the USA (up to 24 hours in other locations). It is able to use US ZIP Codes to identify nearby weather stations, as these are typically local airports which may not be known to users, and displays in metric or "Imperial/English" units.
The Natural Desktop is particularly intended for "knowledge workers" like software developers who have 9-5 jobs at their computers, although it is popular with people living in dreary locations in general, and has even been used by US Army forces stationed in Iraq to find out what the weather is back home. It is distributed via WinCustomize.
