[edit] History

The NSV was founded in 1976 by Edwin Truyens as a radical splinter of the Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond (Catholic Flemish Student Union)). This split came after the national KVHV condemned Truyens and his faction for their radical Flemish-nationalist stances, including accepting nothing less than Flemish independence. Throughout their history, they have made the news several times by being present in actions of the radical side of the Flemish Movement. At universities and highschools, they are considered the counterweight to leftist student organisations. The NSV! celebrates it's 30th birthday in 2006.

[edit] Ideology

The NSV maintains an ideology of radical right-wing nationalism and is very active in the Flemish movement. They are closely associated with the Vlaams Belang, formerly the Vlaams Blok but also have very close ties to organisations in the Flemish movement like the VVB and Voorpost. Famous former members include Filip Dewinter and Frank Vanhecke.

[edit] Colours and symbols

The NSV! is easily recognised by wearing a gray student's hat and wearing student's ribbons (a tradition in Flanders, imported in the early 20th century from Germany). The colour of their ribbons is black-white red, these colours are also present on the student's hat. The black is from the Flemish lion, the white and red are the colours of Antwerp (the city where the NSV! was founded).
