National University of Ireland
University constituency
Created: 1918
Abolished: 1922
Type: House of Commons

The National University of Ireland was a single member, non-territorial University constituency which was (in theory) represented as a Parliament of the United Kingdom constituency 1918-1922. As the Member of Parliament was a Sinn Féin candidate, he never took his seat in the UK House of Commons, preferring to be a member of the (revolutionary) Dáil Éireann.

[edit] The constituency

The National University of Ireland (NUI) was a federal university system of "constituent colleges" and "recognised colleges" set up under the Irish Universities Act, 1908.

As part of the redistribution of Parliamentary seats in 1918, NUI was enfranchised as a new Parliamentary constituency. The electors for the University were its graduates. There were 3,819 registered electors at the time of the only election in the seat.

The 1918 UK general election took place on 14 December and the results were declared on 28 December, except for the university constituencies. NUI voted between 18 December-22 December and the result was declared on 23 December.

The Parliamentary constituency ceased to exist upon the dissolution of the 31st Parliament of the United Kingdom on 23 October 1922.
