National Tsing Hua University (Traditional Chinese: 國立清華大學; Simplified Chinese: 国立清华大学; Hanyu Pinyin: Guólì Qīnghuá Dàxué; Tongyong Pinyin: Guólì Cinghuá Dàsyué; Wade-Giles: Kuo-li Ch'ing-hua Ta-hsuëh) is a university in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. It is one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan, with strong reputations in science and engineering, especially computer science and electrical engineering. Nearby is Hsinchu Science Park, the heart of the computer industry in Taiwan. The university and its neighbor National Chiao Tung University have been competing with each other on many fronts since the inception of both schools. This rivalry is perhaps best exemplified by the annual Mei-Chu tournament (梅竹賽) held in March.
After the Chinese Civil War, Tsinghua University was divided into Tsinghua University in Beijing and National Tsing Hua Institute of Nuclear Technology recreated in 1955 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, which later became National Tsing Hua University. The newly established People's Republic of China removed all "National" appellations for all universities in mainland China to reflect the fact that all institutions under its jurisdiction would be public, while the university re-established in Taiwan kept its old name.
The two Tsinghua Universities are not affiliated with each other, but both claim to be successors of the original Tsinghua University. As a result of this dispute, both universities claimed to be the rightful recipient of the funds from the Boxer Rebellion indemnity that was used to start Tsinghua University. This indemnity was awarded to the university in Taiwan.
