The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is located on the western bank of the world famous Dal Lake near the famous Hazratbal Shrine, about 8 km from Tourist Reception Centre that is in fact the city center.
The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar was started in 1960 as Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established during the first Five Year Plan. It is an autonomous college registered under Societies Act (vi Svt 1999) and is financed both by Central and State Governments. Its administrative and financial control vests in the Board of Governors. Members of the Board comprise Nominees from Central and State Governments. This college was affiliated to the University of Kashmir.
The institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India. Residential facilities are provided for most of the students and staff. Basic amenities like Hospital, Post & Telegraph, Telecom Center, fully computerized Jammu And Kashmir Bank, Canteen, Co-op. Stores etc. are also available in the Campus.
The College has Campus-wide Local Area Network with a number of systems to cater to the needs of the students as well as the staff. This center is open 24 hours a day.
Over the years the institute has won recognition as an important National Institute in the field of Technical Education and has been playing a pivotal role in the development of this region. So far it has produced more than six thousand graduates who are respectably placed in Industry, Government departments, Institutions and in numerous other jobs. Quite a substantial number of its alumni are occupying positions of highest responsibility in reputed organizations, both within the Country and abroad. The College has well equipped laboratories, faculty with high academic profile, computer facilities and infrastructure adequate enough to ensure imparting of quality education in tune with the requirements of the modern industry and technology. The curriculum is constantly updated and the faculty encouraged to get exposed to advanced areas of technology through their participation in Faculty Improvement Programs and Quality Improvement Programs.
Apart from imparting professional education at the graduate and postgraduate levels the institute has been extending available expertise to various Governments, semi-government and private organizations through testing and consultancy services
