The National Institute of Technology, Raipur is a National Institute of Technology (NIT) established as Government College of Engineering and Technology in Raipur (Chhattisgarh) on 1956-09-14. The construction work was completed in 1962 and inauguration was done on 1963-03-14 by India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The first session of the college commenced from 1956-07-01.

[edit] Campus
The NIT, Raipur is spread over an area of 100 acres. The campus has a main college building, six hostel blocks, residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, a bank, a separate PWD and electricity office for campus maintenance, a well equipped dispensary and a well maintained guest house. The campus has got an additional facility of a local railway station meant specially for the benefit of the students of nearby areas. The college is about 5 km from the Raipur railway station and about 12 km from the air-port.
The college's main building alone covers a total area of 62060 m². It is a triple storied planned structure along with a central tower standing up to the height 23 meters. There are 35 lecture halls extending over an area of 6675 m² & 13 drawing halls/studios extending over an area of 3510 m².

At present the institute offers graduate level courses in twelve disciplines. They are:
- Architecture
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mining Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering
- Information Technology
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Biotechnology
- Biomedical Engineering.
In addition, post graduate courses are offered in:
- Applied Geology (M.Tech, 3 years)
- Computer Applications (MCA, 3 years)
- Water Resource Development and Irrigation Engineering (M.E., 2 years)
- Energy System and Pollution (M.E., 2 years)
- Chemical Process Design (M.E., 2 years)
- Computer Engineering (M.Tech., 2 years).
In addition to above programs, the institute also offers part-time Degree Course in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering to the professional diploma engineers working in the industries.

NIT, Raipur has 5 boys hostels and a girls hostel. Each hostel is self contained with amenities such as reading room, an indoor games room and dining hall with mess. All the hostel rooms are adequately furnished. Each hostel has a capacity to house about 100 inmate students. Administrative head of each hostel, the warden, is a senior faculty member. Each hostel has different working committees. Each committee is responsible for specific aspects of hostel affairs.
Well laid out fields are available in the campus including a cricket field, a football ground, volleyball and basketball courts, table tennis tables, playground for hockey, one badminton and tennis court covering a total area of 80,000 m².
The institution is the house of two registered student bodies namely, ROTARACT NIT and JESID NIT. Various student activities are well managed and governed with the help of these two student bodies.
[edit] The Golden Jubilee Celebrations
The institute formerly Govt. Engg. College, Raipur. celebrated its golden jubilee celebrations in a grand fashion during 25-27 December 2005.The celebration witnessed some great cultural events by the Present and the Past students of the institution. The legendary bollywood singer Udit Narayan and his troupe presented an unforgettable night for the entire invitees coming from across the globe. Moreover there were many events organized throughout the three days for all ages who were the part of the celebrations. These events include Fun Zone, Cultural Shows, etc.
