[edit] Location

The National Institute of Engineering is located near the Ashokapuram area, and is located on the Manandavadi Road next to the Karnataka Silk Factory. The campus consists of two sections:

  • The Old Building, which houses the Administrative offices, Library and a Gymnasium, Department offices and laboratories and a Campus branch of Syndicate Bank
  • The Golden Jubilee Complex, operational since 2000 which is located in a lush green campus. It houses the Golden Jubilee Building (where the classes are held), the Canteen and a Playground area.

[edit] History

The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was started in the year 1946 with admission only to a diploma course in Civil Engineering. The first batch of 86 students answered their attendance call sitting in a rustic room with thatched roof. Later, the classes were held in a temporary shed in the nearby Sharada Vilas High School campus, in Mysore. However, the untiring efforts of the retired senior engineer trio, Sri. S. Ramaswamy, Sri. D. V. Narasimha Rao and Sri. T. Ramarao, the founders, gave fruition when the NIE was established by 1950 with its own class rooms and workshops on a sprawling 6 acre (24,000 m²).

The students, who were preparing for AMIE in Civil Engineering (NIE had started AMIE also in 1948 for intermediate - passed students), were permitted to change over to the regular degree course leading to B. E. Degree in Civil Engineering of the University of Mysore. Thus, NIE became the second Engineering College in the state of Karnataka and the first in Mysore. Later, the first batch of students in Civil Engineering graduated in 1953 from the portals of NIE. Progress of the Institute was so rapid that in 1956 the State and Union Governments recognised NIE as one of the institutions listed for development during the second and subsequent five-year plans. In 1958-59, NIE got private-aided institution status under grand-in-aid code of Karnataka government. Now the college under TEQIP i s trying to gain world bank assistance.A separate TEQIP cell is functionong in the college

[edit] Reknowned Departments of Excellence

Certain department in NIE are known for their excellence in their respective subjectes. Mechanical Engineering department is known for the excellent professors and novel methods of teaching they employ. The good leadership of the department started with Dr.Seetharam who headed the department from (Need somedata here) to 1996(?). Who later went on to become the principal of the institution. The department was later briefly headed by J.Jayaraju who was later succeeded by B.S.Sridhar. Dr.Sridhar did his Ph.D. in Fracture Mechanics from IIT Bombay, and known to be very popular amongst his students. He has recently started a research center specializing in Fracture Mechanics in NIE, and has published several papers.

The placement cell is very active and a lot of good companies visit each year.
