National Catholic Reporter

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Catholic Reporter (NCR) is an independent weekly newspaper published since 1964 by laypeople, nuns and priests of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. It is circulated in the United States as well as ninety-six other countries on six continents.

NCR is generally more progressive than other American Roman Catholic periodicals. Some consider the publication less than fully Catholic because of its overt opposition to Church teaching on several topics. Peace, social justice, opposition to capital punishment, gay rights, opposition to anti-abortion laws, support for the Palestinian cause and integrity of the natural environment are frequent topics.

Well-known writers for the NCR include Joan Chittister, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, and John L. Allen, Jr.. The paper is based in midtown Kansas City, Mo.
