[edit] History
At the end of the American Civil War, in July 1866, 45 acres were transferred to the federal government from land owner Morton B. Howell. In 1867 another 17 acres were acquired, and another portion was purchased in 1879 from J. Watts Judson.
The original interments were transferred from veteran hospital cemeteries around the region, as well as battlefield cemeteries, such as those from the Battle of Franklin. There are over four thousand unknowns buried in Nashville National Cemetery.
Nashville National Cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
