Talk:Naraka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It would be interesting to know when exactly did this concept first appear in Hindu mythology. Clearly, the Vedas and the Upanishads do not talk about Naraka, and it seems to have begun in the Puranas. It is also worthwhile to note that many Hindus, like those from Arya Samaj do not accept the puranas. deeptrivia (talk) 19:30, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
In Japan it is known as Meifumadō.
It's not clear that "Meifumadõ" belongs here, or that it is in fact used by the Japanese as an equivalent to Sanskrit "Naraka". "Meifu" (冥府 "dark mansion") appears to be a poetic word for Hell (the normal term is jigoku = 地獄 Di Yu. "Meifumadou", as far as I can tell, is a very rare and possibly technical term meaning "the evil paths that lead to hell". It appears to have been popularized by a Japanese samurai film of that name. Which forms of Bhuddism teach of Naraka? I was not aware of a Bhuddist "hell". MrHen
[edit] Mythology?
At the bottom of the page, it says "This Hindu-mythology related article..." This is a little racist. Hinduism is a still practiced religion, therefore cannot be considered mythology.
