Narayan Wamanrao Tilak (alt.: Narayan Vamanrao Tilak), a noted Marathi poet, patriot and social activist, was a Chitpavan Brahmin from Konkan who converted from Hinduism to Anglicanism.
Tilak's wife Laxmibai Tilak had initially refused to join him in converting but eventually, did so after several years, and particularly after an incident when, due to the absence of any Brahmin to draw water for her, she had to drink water drawn by a Muslim, and being overcome by the though of ritual caste pollution, fell sick.
Tilak was also an associate of Brahmobandab Upadyay, a Bengali Brahmin, nephew of the Protestant Kalicharan who converted to Catholicism and campaigner against Annie Besant and Theosophy.
