Naomi (נָעֳמִי "Pleasant;agreeable", Standard Hebrew Noʿomi, Tiberian Hebrew Noʿŏmî) is Ruth's mother in law in the Old Testament Book of Ruth. She later renamed herself Mara (מרה). (Ruth 1:20-21): "She said to them, 'Do not call me Naomi call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.'" She was dealt bitterly with because her husband died.(Revised Standard Version) Mara is a Hebrew name that means "bitter". Through Ruth's marriage to Boaz she becomes a collateral ancestor of King David.
