Nagrota is located on the NH1, the National Highway #1 in India, when one travels from Jammu northwards towards Udhampur, further on towards Srinagar. It lies in Jammu district.

Nagrota is also a cantonment. The NH1 passes right through Nagrota, or it can be said that the whole of Nagrota lies on either side of the highway - with a few by lanes.

Though Nagrota hasn't a railway station, oddly it's got a Railway Station Code - NGRT.

A Military Police checkpost is located at the entry point. Army personnel are required to enter their particulars - in a register at the checkpoint - upon their entry or passage through Nagrota cantonment.
