Nagaya

Nagaya (長屋王 Nagaya-no-ōkimi; 684 - 20 March 729) was a politician of the Nara period and an imperial prince of Japan, grandson of Emperor Temmu. He was eventually forced to commit suicide by the Fujiwara clan.
He seized the power after the death of Fujiwara no Fuhito in 720, who had been the most powerful courtier in Empress Gemmei's court, who was Nagaya's first cousin. This power shift was a background of later conflicts between Prince Nagaya and Fuhito's four sons in the reign of Shomu Emperor.
