Nadavaru

Nadavaru means the people of Nadu or Country. The Nadavaru perhaps was originally a mother right community having immigrated into North Kanara, India, from Tuluva and appear to be affiliated to the Nadavas and Bunts from South Kanara.They might have migrated to North Kanara in the 12th century. As per 1883 Kanara gazette
Both men and women are tall and strong, most of them being dark and well featured and described as prosperous class. They are clean, hot tempered, hardworking, honest, thrifty, sober and orderly. Many own a large area of land. Some being village headmen and money lenders. Nadavas are vigorous, frugal and prosperous class.
They were famous soldiers during the rule of Vijayanagra and Bidanur kings. They are chiefly found in the taluks ofAnkola and Kumta. Nadvas speak special dialect called nadavra kannada.
Portuguese fleet damaged towns Kumta, Gokharn and Mirjan in January 1714. The fleet caused extensive damage to the properties of Nadvas in the coastal towns.
[edit] Non Tax Movement and Nadavas
During the non tax movement the heroic nadavs of Ankola region known for their martial traits bore all outrageous acts silently as they were wedded ahimsa. For non payment of land revenue, properties were attached. Nadavas considered being major sufferers during the period 1932-1933. This earned North Kanara notable place in the history of freedom movement in India. In November1942 also the entire Nadava community of Ankola participated in the freedom movement of India.
