NACE is short for "Nomenclature Generale des Activites Economiques dans L`Union Europeenne" (General Name for Economic Activities in the European Union).

NACE is the European counterpart of the SIC system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Industrial_Classification

The first four digits of the code are the same in all European countries. The fifth digit might vary from country to country and further digits are sometimes placed by suppliers of databases.
