Na Bolom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Na Bolom, located in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, is a non-profit foundation whose purpose is to aid the indigenous peoples of Chiapas, primarily the Lacandon people of the Selva, in the preservation of their culture, and promotion of education, and medical care. The Lacandon are the only indigenous group never to have been colonized (and converted) by the Spanish. The organization was founded by Danish archeologist Frans Blom and his wife, photographer and anthropologist Gertrude Duby Blom (known during her life as "La Reina de la Selva" (Queen of the Jungle)). The name "Na Bolom", which translates to "House of the Jaguar" in the local Mayan dialect, is a play on the founders' name.
Franz and Gertrude are now both dead, but the large hacienda-style building continues to be run as part hotel, part museum, part research centre. The gardens surrounding the property contain some sculptures donated by friends of the founders.
Na Bolom also arranges tours to sights of interest in the area, including a visit to the Mayan village of Chamula, and overnight tours to the Lacandon area.
