The N10 road is a National Primary Route in Ireland, connecting Kilkenny to the main N9 Dublin–Waterford route. It consists of a route from northeast of Kilkenny, a ringroad around the city, and a route southeast from the city.
[edit] Route
As of 2006, the route leaves the N9 at Whitehall, proceeding southwest to Coolgrange, and west to the outskirts of Kilkenny. Here, at the beginning of the Kilkenny Ring Road, the N77 to Durrow commences, running west into the city centre. The N10 proceeds around the southeast side of the city along the ring road, with the N76 to Clonmel commencing as the ring road continues past the south of the city. From here, the N10 leaves the ring road, passing south through Stoneyford and Knocktopher. Just north of Ballyhale, the N10 rejoins the N9.
[edit] Planned upgrade
The route adjoining the N10, the N9 road, is to be upgraded to dual carriageway throughout. Construction is to begin in 2006 on the N9 section between Powerscourt and Knocktopher. This links to the N10 in two locations, as the previous N9 route did. However, the new N9 will pass further west, closer to Kilkenny, thus more than halving the length of the N10 route.
A completely new N10 route section is to be built from near Dunbell (about 10km west of Kilkenny city centre), running northwest towards the northern side of Kilkenny, with the N10 continuing along an extended ring road to meet the existing N10 Kilkenny Ring Road.
The current southern N10 section, from the south side of Kilkenny, will terminate at a junction on the new N9 at Danesfort (about 12km south of Kilkenny).
