MyWay Searchbar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MyWay Searchbar is spyware that touts itself as a search toolbar. PC companies, more specifically, HP and Dell pre-install this software on their commercially sold PCs. The spyware is attached to browsers Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and pop-up blocking. The software portrays itself as a helpful search engine that allows the user to query Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo!, and LookSmart search engines. MyWay also collects data about the user's surfing habits and tailors ads toward their interests. MyWay is owned by Ask Jeeves.
As a Browser Helper Object, MyWay shares the memory that the browser uses and detects certain events, such as a new browser window. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request that prepares ads according to visited sites. Browsing habits data is collected and sent to a central server which creates custom ads on spaces owned by Ask.com; likely other companies in partnerships as well.
MyWay can redirect the browser to a competitor's site when one attempts to access such a website. For example, www.qantas.com is listed in the MyWay restricted site list. Every attempt to access www.qantas.com will redirect to the MyWay search page, blocking the user from accessing www.qantas.com.
MyWay can greatly restrict one's ability to use the Internet. It is preinstalled on HP and some Dell computers and also on some installations of Kazaa.
