[edit] Song Information
The song was written by Eric Foster White (who became famous by working later with artists such as the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears). Houston doesn't deliver much of a performance though, as her lover mistakenly calles her "Susan", his ex-girlfriend's name, and Houston uses the song to backlash him for his mistake.
Although not particularly successful, it having quite an eccentric title has given the song a slight degree of intrigue among the more sedate songs Houston has released. It was covered "My Name Is Not Sa'ida" by Israeli singer Dana International for her debut single in 1994 and referenced in Salt-N-Pepa's better known hit "Whatta Man" in the same year.
[edit] Chart Information
With virtually no hit single in 1991 (not counting "All The Man That I Need", released in 1990, but hit #1 in 1991), Houston's career was in an obvious decline, not being able to unleash hit after hit like she could back in the '80's. Furthermore, Houston had gathered fierce competition, and seemed to be "losing" the pop race suddenly to rivals such as Janet Jackson (who had placed 7 Top 5 hits from her album Rhythm Nation 1814, a feat never heard of before) and newcomer Mariah Carey (who earned a whopping 5 #1 hits in just a little more than a year).
Hoping to find success with a new, hip-hop oriented single, Houston actually found her lowest charting single in years. "My Name Is Not Susan" barely cracked the Top 20, peaking only at the lowest position. The song only hit #44 on the Hot 100 Single Sales, a chart Houston once dominated, and a #33 on the Hot 100 Airplay, so it was amazing Houston's single even reached #20.
The song stayed in the Top 40 for only 6 weeks, Houston's shortest showing at the time, and peaked at an average #8 on the R&B Chart. Given the song's hip-hop flavoring, "My Name Is Not Susan" also did poorly on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it stopped at #44.
Internationally, the song did even worse. It barely cracked the Top 30 in the UK, peaking at #29, and reached a low #57 in Germany, not even charting in several countries. However in Germany a remixed version of this song (remixed by Snap in 1991) charted in 1998 and reached # 52, five places higher than the original version did in 1991.
