[edit] Reception

The film was poorly received by the public and critics, receiving a very low 23% rotten rating over at "Rottentomatoes.com". The film was also rejected by the Sundance film festival, the Slamdance film festival and most major film festivals. Though the film went on to play at several less notable film festivals, the movie was poorly received by festival audiences. A firestorm of internet debate soon erupted over the film's lowbrow treatment of independent film classics and, as a result, the movie suffered a backlash from die-hard independent film fans, many of which considered the film to be blasphemous toward the genre. The movie experienced a very limited theatrical run. "My Big Fat Independent Movie" was eventually acquired by Anchor Bay Entertainment distribution and the film was released on DVD.

[edit] Trivia

  • The title "My Big Fat Independent Movie" is a pun of the highly successful independent film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
  • The company that co-produced the film ("Film Threat") also runs an online film review magazine under the name "Film Threat" and, despite the consensus of mostly negative reviews of critics nationwide [1], "Film Threat" gave the movie a near-perfect review.[2] This is highly-unusual considering the obvious conflict of interest.
  • "Pauly Shore" makes a brief cameo, as himself, in the movie.
