[edit] Discussion
[edit] Not very Neutral
This sounds more like a blog, and only gives your opinion. You should consider the artist's opinion aswell, i.e. intellectual property theft. - Shirelord 05.01.06, 1746Z
[edit] However...
However, those were not the artist's work. They may have been close, but they were never accurate enough to be considered intellectual property theft. And such websites like MxTabs.net 'always' claimed something to the effect of "This is not the original artist's work. It is to be used for study and personal use. Any errors found can be listed in the Corrections section." They never claimed they were the right tabs, only close enough to be used for study and personal use. However, I feel they are wrong to shut it down. You may feel otherwise but either way its only our opinions. -Classicrockielzpfvh 06.01.06,2004hrs
[edit] Re: However...
I'm with you that it shouldn't have been shut down, I think it's another example of corporate bodies controlling free media. However, this isn't an opinion site/ place for blogs, it's a public encyclopedia and as such should not be filled with biased articles. It appears to have been edited now, will remove neutrality dispute. - Shirelord 06.01.06 0135GMT
[edit] Misinformation
the recent action taken by the MPA against tab and lyrics sites - There has been no action reported yet. What the MPA did in December 2005 was to threaten to target lyrics and tab sites in 2006, and mxtabs.net webmaster Jeremy Ferwerda proactively took down the site (then later redirected it) to avoid the possibility of legal action.
The MPA in their infinte wisdom have decided that users submitting their own representation of a piece of music is effectively stealing music. - The sentence is a sarcastic opinion with a misspelling.
So since have started shutting sites that host them down - so far mxtabs and many others others have been shutdown, if you are opposed to this please visit savethetabs - The sentence is grammatically poor, and the external link does not contain meaningful content. The Guestbook, which is supposed to serve as a petition of sorts, is filled with caustic remarks that will not be taken seriously by anyone at the MPA.
Although Internet petitions are arguably ineffective, if I were to choose an external link, it would be: http://www.petitiononline.com/mioti/petition.html Trialofmiles 08:05, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Rework of the page
I've removed the Brief Closer section of the page and moved that information into the history, which I expanded. I think we should summarize and remove the letter, as it has not been released into the public domain, and doesn't even need to be here. I'm going to do so in a few days if there are no objections. [edit] The open letter
I belive that the open letter writen by the directors of mxtabs is an inportant part of this article, as it explains the reasons for the absece in great detail and also introduces the idea of tab licsencing. So please do not delete the open letter. But the removal of the brief closer and expansion of the history was a good idea.
- Thing is, we don't have permission to use the letter here. It is not public domain, and takes up more than half of the article. I think it would be better to summarize it. The way it reads now could indicate to readers that wikipedia supports mxtabs above the MPA, which it doesn't. The letter should be summarized and we should possibly even add a discussion of the MPA's argument to make this article neutral. Quentin mcalmott 03:26, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
I also disagree with the existing use of the Open Letter. It may be a genuine resource and worthy of inclusion in some form, but it is out-of-place in an encyclopedia. I suggest either swiftly coming up with a summary, or removing it, as it is highly out-of-place, it reads from a first-person-perspective, and it is one-sided, despite being ostensibly a letter of defence. I personally would sum it up in a paragraph and would provide it as an external resource. ToneLa 13:54, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- The Open Letter has been removed, and I've summarized it here. I think it looks much better now, and fits into Wikipedia. Thoughts? Quentin mcalmott 09:18, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re-return
mxtabs.net has once again been re-opened.
- Oddly, I can't find any tabs that are accessible; they only show the second closure notice. Quentin mcalmott 23:40, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
