MXenergy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MXenergy is a privately owned energy company based in Stamford, Connecticut. One of the largest natural gas and electricity suppliers in North America, MXenergy supplies energy to more than 500,000 commercial and residential customers in 30 utility territories in the United States and Canada.

MXenergy was founded in April 1999 by current President and CEO Jeff Mayer and Executive Vice-President Carole Artman-Hodge. The company first started serving customers in the Baltimore Gas & Electric territory, and is now a licensed and authorized energy supplier in 11 states and Ontario.

Unlike most utilities, MXenergy offers its customers a choice between fixed and variable rate plans: fixed rate (consumers lock in a rate for up to three years), variable rate (consumers benefit from rates in a declining market), variable cap (consumers take advantage of lower rates and are protected from rising rates), and seasonal cap (consumers lock in a rate for six months).

MXenergy has a public commitment to consumer education, and has hosted a number of open forums where participants can learn about the natural gas industry and their options as consumers. The company web site also offers energy saving tips that residents can easily implement to reduce their energy bills and minimize their environmental impact.

In August 2006, MXenergy acquired Houston-based Shell Energy Services Company (Shell Energy--a Royal Dutch Shell subsidiary) in a deal that added about 100,000 businesses and homes to the company's customer base. As part of the acquisition, Shell President and CEO Steven Murray joined MXenergy as Chief Operating Officer.
