Muster (Texas A&M University)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On April 21 of each year, on the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, current and former students of Texas A&M University, known as Aggies, gather together, wherever they are, to commemorate fellow Aggies who have died during the year. The Tradition first began on July 26, 1883. In 1922, the official date for Muster was fixed as April 21.

The most well-known Aggie Muster took place in 1942 on the island of Corregidor. There, General George F. Moore and 25 other Aggies mustered as the Japanese laid siege to the island.

In 2004, there were over 400 Aggie Musters worldwide. The largest, with around 13,000 in attendance, was held in Reed Arena on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

[edit] Notes

Some time in the 1880s the Corp of Cadets was invited by the State of Texas to play the Mexican army in a reinactment of the Battle of San Jacinto. Texas A&M lore has it that the Cadets were later disinvited after refusing to lose to the Texans.

Muster is officially known as "Aggie Muster."
