Mustard Plug is a third-wave ska band from Grand Rapids, Michigan. They consider themselves a ska/punk band but rarely approach politics more than peripherally. However, a raspy vocalist, distorted guitar, sing-along group sung choruses, and powerchords galore give them ample room to call themselves such. In general, they're known for their traditional ska instrumental style, upbeat, and "happy-sounding" songs. This includes walking basslines, the classic upstroke guitar technique, 4/4 timing drums, a catchy but simplistic horn section, fast singing, and their trademark group-choruses. Mustard Plug is a favorite among ska purists, as well as generic fans, and they have a very large fanbase. They were among some of the earliest punk bands in the 90s to fuse ska with punk and refused to change their sound even after the ska explosion faded down and most of their contemporaries switched over to emo or pop/punk.
Formed in 1991, the band's original members were Dave Kirchgessner, Mike McKendrick, Colin Clive, and Anthony Vilchez. Currently, the band consists of Dave(Vocals), Brandon Jenison (Trumpet), Jim Hofer (Trombone), Nate Cohn(Drums), Colin Clive(Guitar/Vocals), and Rick Johnson(Bass).
The band has regularly toured throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. They have toured with the Warped Tour twice, and participated in the Ska Against Racism Tour.
Over the years and many lineup changes, Mustard Plug has also varied their songs slightly. Recently, they released "Masterpieces", a CD that combines olds songs with new recordings, without the use of a Digital Audio Workstation. They are still together and currently on tour. On July 27, 2006, the band announced via their website that news will soon be released about a new album, though no information is yet posted other than a music video for their new song, "Over the Edge."
