Mustafa Kamal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Syed Mustafa Kamal (born 1972 in Karachi) is the City Nazim (Mayor) of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He studied in Karachi till Intermediate and left for Malaysia where he completed an Associate Diploma in Business Executive studies. He earned his MBA in Marketing from the University of Wales (UK). He served as a minister for Information Technology with the Sindh government before taking over as the Nazim of Karachi.
He has been associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for more than a decade. He was nominated as Mayor (City Nazim) by the Haq Parast panel in local bodies election 2005. Kamal received 1,493 votes compared to the 800 votes obtained by his main rival, former city nazim Naimatullah Khan, fielded by the Tameer-i-Karachi Ittehad of the combined opposition parties. The "election" of Mustafa Kamal was marred by numerous irregularities and shameless violations of the law and ethics of free elections. As mentioned above, Kamal gained 1,493 votes in a city with a population of more than 10 million.
The existing Nazim Naimatullah Khan, belonging to the extremist group, Jamaat-e-Islami, had strong support from the vast majority of the people of Karachi. Even though most of Karachi's population is relatively educated and moderate and hence against the Jamaat-e-Islami, they supported Naimatullah Khan out of appreciation of the clearly visible progress the city had made under his leadership.
[edit] Recent events
In August 2006, Syed Mustafa Kamal was widely criticised over his administration's handling of the aftermath of torrential monsoon rains that plagued the city. The heavy rains caused the deaths of a sizable number of people and heavy damage to infrastructure.
