Murphy is a city in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,099 at the 2000 census.

Murphy is located at GR1.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,099 people, 1,030 households, and 909 families residing in the city. The population density was 227.9/km² (589.7/mi²). There were 1,126 housing units at an average density of 82.8/km² (214.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 76.06% White, 9.52% African American, 1.10% Native American, 9.07% Asian, 2.00% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.94% of the population.
There were 1,030 households out of which 47.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 82.3% were married couples living together, 3.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 11.7% were non-families. 8.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 37.8% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $83,547, and the median income for a family was $87,214. Males had a median income of $61,354 versus $41,172 for females. The per capita income for the city was $31,149. About 1.1% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.2% of those under age 18 and 1.2% of those age 65 or over.

The city of Murphy, Texas adopted a Home Rule Charter and the power of the city is vested in a council of elected individuals who regulate and legislate and appoint other officials, such as the City Manager, who heads the executive branch. The council as of 2006 is Bret Baldwin, Michelle Long, Roger Davis, Eric Barna, Murray Sanderford and Dwayne Elledge. Bret Baldwin was elected Mayor in 2005 and is serving a 3 year term.

The city is served by Plano Independent School District and Wylie Independent School District.
The Plano ISD part is served by Boggess Elementary, Martha Hunt Elementary, Miller Elementary, Armstrong Middle School, Murphy Middle School, Williams High School, and Plano East Senior High School.
The Wylie ISD part is served by Groves Elementary, R. F. Hartman Elementary, Akin P M Elementary School, Harry and Retha Tibbals Elementary School, Birmingham TF Elementary School, Harrison Intermediate School, Davis Intermediate School, Raymond B. Cooper Junior High School, McMillan Junior High School, Burnett Junior High School, and Wylie High School.
