IMDb profile

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is an award-winning 2003 Bollywood comedy directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

It is the first film of the Munna Bhai series, followed by Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Each installment features the central characters (Munna Bhai portrayed by Sanjay Dutt and Circuit portrayed by Arshad Warsi) in a story which is comprehensive unto itself and is not continued or referred to in another film in the series. The series has been likened to Laurel and Hardy films by some. [1] Others have negated this comparison, stating that the series is more akin to the Road to... "buddy films" of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. [2] The series also stars Boman Irani as the antagonist and Jimmy Shergill as a secondary character who is rescued by Munna Bhai.

In this film, Munna Bhai decides to become a doctor.

[edit] Synopsis

The main plot revolves around the continuing adventures of the protagonist, Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt) , a bhai or a Tapori (a leader in the Mumbai underworld who speaks in Bambaiya Hindi) and his sidekick (who provides the comic relief of the series), Circuit (Arshad Warsi).

Munna is generally a happy man; except during his beloved parents' annual visits to Mumbai. They wanted him to be a doctor and he doesn't want to disappoint them ... so, whenever his father (Sunil Dutt) and mother (Rohini Hattangadi) visit, he turns his gangster pad into the faux Sri Hari Prasad Sharma Charitable Hospital and pretends to be a medical doctor.

One year, however, Munna's plan goes awry. His father meets an old acquaintance, Dr. Asthana (Boman Irani) and the two older men decide to marry Munna to Dr. Asthana's daughter, Dr. Suman (Gracy Singh). It is at this point that the truth about Munna is revealed and Munna's parents are heartbroken.

Munna Bhai decides that the only way to redeem himself is to become a doctor. So he decides to go to school in order to obtain an M.B.B.S. degree (this is the undergraduate medical degree in India, which stands for "Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery").

With the help of his friend Circuit and others, "gains admission" to the Imperial Institute of Medical Sciences, where he runs head-on into Dr. Asthana, who just happens to be the dean of the medical school.

While Munna Bhai's skills as a medical doctor are questionable, he transforms those around him with the "Magic Hug" and the compassion he shows towards those in need.

[edit] Background

Sunil Dutt, who plays Munna's father in the film, is the actor Sanjay Dutt's real father. This was Sunil Dutt's first film role in 10 years, and his last role ever in a film, since he died in 2005. Although this is the first film in which real-life father and son Sunil and Sanjay appear together, they both appeared in Reshma Aur Shera (1971), Rocky (1981) and Kshatriya (1993) but not in any scenes together.

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. was originally supposed to feature Shah Rukh Khan (another Bollywood mega star) in the title role. The end credits mention his name and thank him for his inputs to the character [1].
