Mulingushi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Located in Zambia, Mulungushi is a man-made lake created by the Broken Hill Development Company when a hydo-electric facility was established to provide electric power to the Broken Hill Mine in Kabwe. It's sister facility is near by, named Mita Hills Dam.

During the Rhodesian conflict, Kenneth Kaunda (then president of Zambia) permitted anti-Rhodesian freedom fighters of Joshua Nkomo to maintain a significant base of operations in the Mulungushi area. Tanks being supplied to Nkomo by the East German's were using Mulungushi as a staging area for a possible conventional warefare attack against Rhodesia.

In the late 1970's Rhodesian special forces (SAS Regiment and Selous Scouts) and Rhodesian Air Force raided the base at Mulungushi killing an estimated 2,000 insurgents.
