Mukutmanipur

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mukutmanipur (Bengali: মুকুটমণিপুর) is a small town in Bankura district of West Bengal, India noted for being a tourist location. It is located on the confluence of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers close to the Bihar border. Near Mukutmanipur is an artificial reservoir created by an earthen dam. The West Bengal Department of Irrigation is responsible for the upkeep of the dam and must be intimated prior to exploring the dam. Jhilimili is a popular tourist spot close to the dam.

Four kilometers from the dam is the ancient town of Ambikanagar, once an important place of pilgrimage for Jains. However, a flood destroyed most of what remained in 1898.

Approximately two kilometers from the lake is the Bangopalpur Reserve Forest, a home of many species of flora and fauna.

Most tourists arrive from Kolkata, 382 kilometers away either by Rupashi Bangla or the Purulia Express.
