Mukherjee Bengali: মুখার্জি is a popular Bengali surname, common among residents of the Indian state of West Bengal. According to the Hindu Indian caste system, Mukherjees belong to kulin brahmans group (along with Chatterjee, Bannerjee, Bhattacharya and Ganguly ), the top rung of the Bengali Brahmin caste.

Mukherjee is an anglicized version of Mukhopadhyay Bengali: মুখোপাধ্যায়, which losely means "Chief Priest". The name can also be spelled "Mookerjee", "Mukerjee", "Mukherjea" or "Mookherjee".
