[edit] Critisism section
I heard Dr. Yunus' speach at the Nobel Peace Price award ceremony earlier today. A few of the points in the Critisism section of the article contradicts what he said in his speach. What is correct?
The critisism section claims the bank gets funding from overseas organizations. Dr. Yunus' claimed today that this is not the case anymore. Also, the critisism section claims the bank does not reach the poorest of the poor due to the need for them to pay interest. Dr. Yunus' said in his speach that they had special programmes for beggars where they don't have to pay interest. Can anyone clarify this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gosub (talk • contribs) 00:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Aga Khan award for architecture?
Why has a banker and economist been given the Aga Khan award for architecture? There are multiple awards given out by the Aga Khan Foundation so perhaps this refers to one of those other awards and the writer has confused them. If he has indeed won the Architecture prize, perhaps some reference should be made to buildings desgined by him.
The Grameen Bank Housing Programme was one of the winners, that year, according to http://www.akdn.org/agency/akaa/fourthcycle/awards87-89.html. Whether that should count as an award for Muhammad Yunus is another question. Rojomoke 14:31, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
For his biography see following excellent source : http://www.rmaf.org.ph/Awardees/Biography/BiographyYunusMuh.htm
[edit] Teaching Experience added
Added sentance about life from 1969 to 1972 on his teaching experience in the US before moving back home. That info on this link http://chronicle.com/free/2006/10/2006101309n.htm
[edit] Needs brush up
Its a great news that Dr. Yunus has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm sure the hits on his biography page has increased exponentially today. But those who are changing the contents, please be careful. Same quotes are being repeated from the Nobel committee's presentation of the award. Also, there are typos. Please remember that it's better not to give any information, rather than giving poor quality information. For those editing, please take your time to read the whole article and edit only the sections required. Eendrani 14:55, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Unnecessary Information
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Yunus#Nobel_Winners_of_the_Subcontinent Is this information really relevant under Dr. Yunus' entry? If no one opposes I'll remove or shorten this section. Or, may be it could be moved to it's own entry. -- Abid Ahmed 15:06, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, and have removed this irrelevant and speculative section. --Ragib 15:11, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Abid Ahmed on shorten it or have its own article, but do not agree with Ragib, who has removed it totally, Ragib is saying it is irrelevent, but, obviously there is relavance, "Bengali" Nobel winner, or, "South-Asian sub-continent Nobel winner", like Dr. Yunus. Bose or chowdhury entry could have been compromised. (View removed data here). ~Tarikash 15:35, 13 October 2006 (UTC).
Ok, I don't want to be anal, but in order to make this a credible article, we need to get rid of information that may be superfluous. Is this section necessary? Are they a credible source like NY Times (most influential list)? Probably not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad Yunus#One of the Best Living Bengalis -- Abid Ahmed 15:28, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- If this section One of the Best Living Bengalis can be kept, so can that section Nobel Winners of the Subcontinent, as well, a short version, at least. (View removed data here). ~Tarikash 16:01, 13 October 2006 (UTC).
- Well, I think the list is nearly irrelevant. The living Bengali one.Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 20:37, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

- I merged it with the awards section. The piece is unreferenced, and not very significant anyway. Muktadhara NY is not representative of any significant population at all. --Ragib 22:52, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I just started a Wikiquote article here. Please help flesh out the article if you know some appropriate quotes. jaco♫plane 17:21, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Reference Problem
In order to provide reference to the section where unwillingness to give loans by the traditional banks are written, I checked the daily star of October 14. But it is very clear that they just copy and paste those lines from wiki. As the daily is a renouned one, should it still be used as a reference for that part?Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 19:49, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Another Section
I think another section is necessary to highlight his later carrier. Because it's not appropriate to include Nobel Prize information in the 'Education and Early Carrier' section. There are other necessary information also to give.Tarif Ezaz Bangladesh 20:32, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with you. Many thanks to Ragib, for making the new section on "Nobel prize", and including/presenting/displaying the exact Quote and other data, in a much nicer/better way. ~Tarikash 06:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Academic titles
Please do not add "Professor" or "Doctor" before Yunus' name in the first sentence of the article. Such titles are not appropriate in an encyclopedia article. You may state that he is a doctor or professor, but do not refer to him as "Doctor Yunus" or "Professor Yunus" in the article. Per the Wikipedia Manual of Style: "Academic and professional titles (such as 'Doctor' or 'Professor') should not be used before the name in the initial sentence or in other uses of the person's name." Kaldari 23:16, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well, i disagree with your this opinion. He has earned and certified to use the "Dr." in front of his name like any other Ph.D. holder. You, or me, or, some other may not value it, but, the fact is that, he earned it. He is awared many "Doctorate" degrees as well. And he is also entitled to use the word "Professor" since he is very very very expert and pioneer in his expertise AND elected by board/committee of other expert to represent his expert view on his line, AND agreed by everyone, that he is an expert figure in his line, which entitles him, to be called by the word "Professor", PUBLICLY. AND not only by one board/commitee, by MANY, and many, not to mention, countless public. And he has PROVEN his experties also, through the "Grameen bank" and the difference he has made on the poor people (financially) all over the world, in many level, by even winning (/awarded with) a prestigious Nobel prize, the honor. He is always trying to reach various level of people, by using his experties, thus, he can be called, identified by the word Professor in front of his name. ~Tarikash 07:12, 16 October 2006 (UTC).
I now see that, you've removed those titles !!! why aren't / haven't you removing /removed similar titles, from Abdus Salam, Amartya Sen, Sheldon Lee Glashow, Richard E. Taylor, Clive Granger, James Mirrlees, Richard Stone, William Arthur Lewis, John Hicks, ETC articles (who are all Nobel award/honor winner), or the "Sir" title from many other articles ? please explain in detail, WHY you've removed it, and WHY not from the others ? ? ? difference ? Many thanks. ~Tarikash 08:08, 16 October 2006 (UTC).
Suggesting/recommending to add "DLitt" or Litt.D., "DCL", LL.D. , "DSc", etc before the Ph.D., (after his name), as well. Because he holds following honorary degrees(honoris causa) : Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Civil Law (DCL), Doctor of Laws (LLD), Doctor of Science (DSc) in Economics, etc, which are even more prestigious than Ph.D. For more see List of Awards, Doctor (title), Academic degree. Thanks. ~Tarikash 10:35, 16 October 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Awards
Here in this line "Additionally, Prof. Yunus has been awarded 27 honorary doctorate degrees (all but one a doctorate), and 15 special awards.", what is the "doctorate" inside the braces referring to ? needs further rectification or removed, cause, those 27 ARE Honorary Doctorate Degrees. Also see Doctor (title), Doctorate, Academic degree, Ph.D., etc articles. ~Tarikash 03:28, 17 October 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Ravi Shankar
It says he is a setar musician and there is no link to a setar. Shouldn't it be sitar? I'll change it to sitar and give it a link, if this wrong please change it back. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.59.251.176 (talk • contribs) 15 October 2006.
- Was this comment mistakenly placed here, or am I missing something? --SameerKhan 04:56, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
-
- Perhaps s/he wanted the attention of someone from an Indian background and s/he thought this would be a good place to get one? Who knows... In any case, s/he didn't change the Ravi Shankar article which already says sitar and appears to have done so since the beginning (although perhaps someone changed it at some stage which I missed but it wasn't recently) so the above comment is even more bizzarre. Even Google doesn't help. BTW, there is a setar but Ravi Shankar is indeed a sitar player AFAIK. Nil Einne 21:04, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] what is his religion?
he is muslim, hindu or buddhist? this could be in the article, i couldnt find anything otherwise i would add it myself, maybe someone else will ahve more luck than me - --193.136.128.14 13:48, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- He is a muslim. --Ragib 02:53, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Other Grameen Sectors (2)
Is the section "Other Grameen Sectors" really important in this article ? Pyb 12:18, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- No, it isn't. A more appropriate vessel would be the Grameen Bank article. --Zaheen 20:10, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yunus' wife
What is the name of the wife of Yunus ? Vera Forostenko [1] or Afroji Yunus (en:) or Afroza [2] ? Pyb 16:19, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- Dr. Yunus married twice ... his first wife was Vera Forostenko, and they had a daughter named Monica Yunus who is a pianist in New York. That marriage ended in a divorce ... soon after Yunus returned to Bangladesh. Dr. Afroji Yunus is his 2nd wife. They have a daughter, Dina Yunus. --Ragib 16:33, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Net profit 5 Taka?
According to this interview, net profit of the women in Jobra village was 10 Anas (16 Ana=1 Taka). I am not sure whether I should change this portion of the article. This refernce can be used here, I have used it in liberation war portion. Thanks. Auyon 13:19, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Political activity
He's likely to contest the coming elections according to this article... Should be included in the article, shouldn't it? —Nightstallion (?) 15:23, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think we can wait a little bit (a few days or so), until he returns from his trip to Korea to accept the Seoul Peace Prize. I assume that he'll make his intentions clear once he gets back to Bangladesh. --Ragib 15:26, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
