He joined Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen in his youth and became a student of Islamic studies, Muhammad Ishtiaq was taught Arabic and Islamic Studies by the late Syed Masood Ahmad, and before becoming the Amir of Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen he was an orator for this group, a teacher at Madrasah Islamiya (Islamic School) and also as Nazim (organizer) of Tableegh.

[edit] Controversy

Muhammad Ishtiaq was arrested on charges of breaking the Hudood laws in Pakistan. He married Sumaira, one of his Disciples, who was allegedly already married to Shakeel. This according to the Islamic laws is Haraam. He was later released from custody on a bail of one lakh rupees. (Source: Dawn Newspaper). The Jamaat-ul-Muslimeen deny this and say that the divorce was done, however the papers were not released from the High court of Pakistan. Hence the Nikah, according to them, was valid.
