MTL (train operator)

MTL (Rail), a subsidiary of MTL Holdings was the Merseyside-based operator which was awarded two major rail franchises on January 19, 1997 to operate rail networks in Merseyside and the North-East, England. The business divisions were known as Merseyrail Electrics and Northern Spirit (inc. Transpennine Express). Approximately 2500 staff worked within the rail division.

Rail operations on the two franchises, passed to Arriva Trains in 1999. They became Arriva Trains Merseyside and Arriva Trains Northern (inc. Transpennine Express).
