Mrs. Scheisskopf

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mrs. Scheisskopf is a minor character in Joseph Heller's classic novel Catch-22.

Mrs. Scheisskopf is married to Lieutenant Scheisskopf, who is too busy planning parades to fulfill her masochistic sexual fantasies. Instead, she sleeps with Lt. Scheisskopf's soldiers, so they can all get revenge on her husband, and she thinks she is going to be pregnant each month after losing count of her cycle even though she has a Maths major. She is also very well read, in direct contrast to her husband's narrowmindedness for parades.

In one notable exchange, she and Yossarian lay in bed on Thanksgiving debating the existence of God. While both claim to be atheists, Mrs. Scheisskopf insists that the God she does not believe in is benevolent, and she is distressed at Yossarian's characterizing the God he does not believe in as wrathful and cruel.
