Mr. Spencer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mr. Spencer is a fictional character from the J. D. Salinger novel The Catcher in the Rye.
Mr. Spencer appears early in the book when Holden Caulfield decides to visit him before his expulsion from Pencey Prep. Mr. Spencer is critical of Holden and his lack of direction. He appeals to Holden to apply himself, but Holden gives no signal that he will heed Mr. Spencer's advice.
Mr. Spencer illustrates the lack of connection that Holden has with adults. Despite reaching adulthood, Holden is unable to interact with other adults and finds better company in children, namely his little sister Pheobe Caulfield.
