[edit] Plot synopsis
Harold Gumbal is killed after being forced to rob his own jewelry store and shoot a security guard. Monk is called in to investigate, but Marty Eels (Jason Alexander), a second-rate gumshoe, (who compares himself to Philip Marlowe to Adrian Monk's Sherlock Holmes) appears on the scene and seems to be even more Monk-ish than Monk himself, finding seemingly impossible clues. Did he improve his game, or is he cheating? Monk thinks it's the latter, but Eels is on such a roll that Monk begins to doubt himself. Stottlemeyer even takes him off the case.
However, Monk gets a break in the case and is able to figure out Eels is cheating. His mother, who answers phones at an airport, discovered the whole scheme while listening to a call on hold, and told Eels everything so he could pretend to solve the case. He can't prove it, but it turns out to be moot, as Eels' mother is kidnapped by the same man who shot Gumbal. Monk then uses his preternatural powers of detection to find where she is being held, and they rescue her just in the nick of time, as Stottlemeyer and the police arrest the bad guy. Eels realizes he is out of his league and decides to take a teaching job instead.
