[edit] Moves and Abilities

Mr. Game & Watch is a secret character in Super Smash Bros. Melee. To unlock him, the player must clear Classic, Adventure, or Target Test with every character except Mr. Game & Watch. Alternatively, Mr. Game & Watch can be unlocked by playing 1,000 "vs." matches to completion. All other characters will be unlocked at increments of 100 matches. This is presumably to allow a player to unlock characters while never playing the game solo, though "vs." matches can be played solo against an AI-controlled character. In battle, Mr. Game & Watch boasts a large arsenal of items from certain Game & Watch titles that he can use to attack his opponents; these include a bug spray (from Green House and the Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong 3), a frying pan tossing food (usually Bacon, from Chef), a scuba diving helmet (from Octopus), a bucket (from Oil Panic), a chair (from Lion), a burning stick (from Fire Attack and Mario's Bombs Away) his bell-ringing taunt (which is an alarm icon in all the Game & Watch titles), and more. When falling off a stage, Mr. Game & Watch can call upon a crew of firemen to appear under him with a trampoline, bounce him up, and disappear instantly afterward; this move is from the Game & Watch title Fire!. Nearly all of Mr. Game & Watch's attacks are references to the games he has starred in.

Mr. Game & Watch is normally a solid black color; his palette swaps are Red, Blue and Green. Also, when charging up the Super Scope, he turns Yellow, and while firing a Ray Gun he turns green (For the first decisecond he turns white, though this can only be seen when the game is paused at the right moment). When holding a hammer, Mr. Game & Watch is the only character that uses only one hand, and when using an item such as a bunny hood it will be 3D while Mr. Game & Watch is still 2D. Also, when he grabs a metal box, he'll appear 3-D while under its influence, though when the game is paused, one can tell that only his shading has changed, and he is still actually 2-D.

Interestingly enough, Mr.Game and Watch is not actually a flat, two dimensional character, but rather a three dimensional character smashed flat using the same algorithm applied to all of the characters when they battle in his stage, FlatZone. Then a cel-shading flag is placed on him to give him the constant white outline no matter his orientation, the same flag put on Kirby when he copies Mr.Game and Watch's abilities. His smooth 3D form has been revealed by people changing characters movesets using the Action Replay, in which Mr.Game and Watch has been seen moving smoothly and fluidly as he performs Mario's moves.

[edit] Flat Zone

Mr. Game & Watch also has an accompanying stage named "Flat Zone", a location in the larger "Superflat World", which looks like a Game & Watch Helmet system, although the name has been changed to say "Smash Bros.", while certain things and characters from certain Game & Watch titles are added into it. Sometimes tools such as buckets and wrenches will fall from the sky, reminiscent of the object of the game "Helmet", which was to dodge falling tools. Other obstacles are some platforms with a man holding a manhole cover, while he moves in different spots with it, reminiscent of the object of the game "Manhole", which was to keep pedestrians from falling into the sewers. Also, a worker from the game "Oil Panic" will sometimes walk out of the building on the right side of the stage, and will accidentally spill oil, making it slippery and difficult for players to move around normally. It is also one of the two SSBM arenas that doesn't have a way to fall through the bottom (the EarthBound-based Onett being the other one).

When Mr Game & Watch is grabbed and is being thrown, his movement changes from his trademark frame movement to the standard animations (much smoother than his own animations) used for any character when being thrown. This most noticeable when Donkey Kong carries Mr. Game & Watch on his back.

[edit] Notes

It is currently unknown if he will return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, along with almost all of the other characters.

His "voice" is composed of beeping sounds, some of which are taken from Game and Watch games.

[edit] Characteristics

Mr. Game & Watch is a resident of a totally flat world, and has an easily recognizable frame by frame style of movement. Mr. Game & Watch is equipped with a multitude of skills, since he has successfully tried almost every job in the world: juggling, cooking, exterminator, treasure-searching, defending a fort from Native Americans, parachuting, being a fireman, or even a judge.

[edit] Concept and creation

He is one of Nintendo's first video game creations (having premiered in April 28, 1980). Before the Game Boy or the Famicom was introduced, the Game & Watch series appeared as individual timepieces. His appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee finally yielded him his name, as prior to this he was an anonymous protagonist. In addition, and to the confusion of some, he can be found in many Wario games, including the new WarioWare, Inc. games. Mr. Game & Watch also manages the Present section of Game & Watch Gallery 4, together with Mario. He can talk in this game.

It is a common misconception that Mr. Game & Watch appears in Wario Land 4. There is a shop in the game, with an owner who looks similar to Mr. Game & Watch. However, it cannot be him, as the store owner has eyes, whereas Mr. Game & Watch doesn't. Also, it is later revealed that the store owner is in fact Princess Shokora in disguise.
