[edit] Welcome!
Hi Mpatel, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

- Picture tutorial, instructions on uploading images.
- How to write a great article, to make it an featured article status.
- Manual of Style, how articles should be written.
Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :
Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

[edit] Perihelion precession
I suspect that the larger number includes "general precession" . I think that is an echo in a way of the Earth's axis' precession, which causes the Vernal Equinox to move relative to the stars. See [1]. I actually know Sten Odenwald, who wrote that page, and he's quite capable. He runs "ask an astronomer" on some site or other - I don't see him any more but you could always look up that site and question him further.Pdn 01:29, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] User:Hillman
Hi, I just found out that I seem to have mortally angered Chris Hillman. As you seem to be on friendly terms with him, I wanted to ask that, if possible, to relay the message that my intent was to be helpful and suggestive. Perhaps I chose certain words poorly, or wrote in a harsh tone of voice, or seemed overly critical; this was unintentional, and was not meant to anger or dishearten anyone. I found Chris to be a pleasent and constructive author (which is much kinder than I what can say for some here on WP). I did not mean to upset him in any way; I am saddened to have caused him so much anguish. Please extend my apologies if he will have them. linas 16:13, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
- I would make this apology directly to him, publically or privately, except that he seems to have indicated that he never wants to see another edit by me ever again. So, in order to respect his wishes, it seems I should not communicate with him directly. linas 16:23, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
-
- Hi, linas. Yes, I'll pass on the message. Probably just heat of the moment stuff. I know he's planning to take a short time off from WP, so I hope everything will eventually work out fine for everyone.--Mpatel 10:07, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Re : Hi and help appreciated
Hi Mpatel,
For text colors, conventional HTML works!. :)
For background colors, try using tables and Cascading Style Sheets.

[edit] Re: user page?
Mpatel -
Yours is the first request that I have gotten to create a user page to remove the resultant redlinks. (I have been at a loss as to what to write, but I will come up with something soon.) --EMS | Talk 17:25, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Kaaba
Good edit on Kaaba. The text flows much more smoothly now.
Now we have to deal with all the junk that got dumped there from the "List of people born in the Kaaba". Zora 20:54, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] unhooked categories
I hope that you do not mind, but I edited your draft rewrite on general covariance so that it would stop showing up in the categories. --EMS | Talk 19:10, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your understanding. BTW - My user page exists now, and has for a couple of weeks. --EMS | Talk 15:05, 8 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] White hole
I added some commentary to the discussion page of your White hole article. I hope that it is helpful. --EMS | Talk 18:05, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Classification of EM fields
Hi, MP, I just wrote a loooong note in Talk:Classification of electromagnetic fields. I still haven't gotten back to finishing the draft manifesto for Wikiproject GTR, but I took the liberty of signing you up. Hope this is OK--- once I finish the draft, I hope to get charter members (so far, I guess that you would you, EMS, and I) to read the draft and suggest changes before I announce the project officially. Actually, I don't yet know how to do that--- do you have to be an administrator to create a project page?---CH (talk) 07:28, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Actually, you've got a point re Kitab
Mpatel, that's actually a good point you made re Kitab. So we should make sure the Arabic term is there for all the beliefs? In other news, could you please removed the recent additions to the first para of Islam, in which Zeno and his cronies state that Islam is synonymous with Islamism (and thus, terrorists). I've used up my reverts. Zora 10:34, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Saudi Arabia?
Hullo, you changed "Arabian peninsula" to "Saudi Arabia" in the Muhammad article. But there wasn't any Saudi Arabia in Muhammad's time. It's kind of misleading to use that term. Praps we could say, in the Hejaz, in the present-day Saudi Arabia? Or something like that? Zora 10:54, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] The essay by J. D Norton about general covariance
Hi Mpatel,
I noticed your sandbox version of the article about General covariance. One of the two references is the excellent essay by John D. Norton: General Covariance and the Foundations of General Relativity: Eight Decades of Dispute.
The link that currently in the article eprint version is a members only link.
The article is also available from the homepage of J. D. Norton. http://www.pitt.edu/~jdnorton/papers/decades.pdf
Strangely, the PDF-file is not in a text format. The PDF-file is a whopping 4 MegaBytes, because the PDF-file consists of integral images of each of the individual pages. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 12:07, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Cleon. Yeah, his massive review is rather lengthy - I still haven't read it! Thanks for the great link to J. D. Norton's home page. Much appreciated. Feel free to contribute to my sandbox article on general covariance. ---Mpatel (talk) 15:17, August 27, 2005 (UTC)
I must admit that at some point I did start reading the essay "diagonally". (Having recommended it, I'll have to really read it). I was impressed, but it is hard to read, both in content, and in looks, the letters are wriggly and spidery from not actually being letters.
What I like about Norton is that he really takes a neutral point of view. I am way biased against, I tend to think of it as the habit of general covariance, I don't see it as a physics principle. However, John Norton argues well that one cannot simply dismiss it. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 16:07, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject GTR draft manifesto
Hi, just wanted to let you know that I finally completed the first draft of the WikiProject GTR manifesto. I also found the pages describing what needs to be done to formalize the project--- its actually very easy, but I'll wait for further comment from you and EMS before formalizing the project. One of the pages I read suggests a minimal membership of 5-10 individuals. That sounds high to me; I am more interested in coordinating efforts of us 3 with other frequent contributors. In any case, since ErkDemon is contributing to the GTR pages, I am leaving a message on his user page asking if he'd like to be a fourth charter member.---CH (talk) 02:47, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Relativity-stub
Hi - you didn't quite get how to make the category right for the relativity stubs, but it was an easy fix. The template now puts articles in Cat:Relativity stubs rather than "Relativity-related stubs" (we're trying to remove category names with "-related" in them, but you weren't to know that). I've alsomade that category a subcategory of Cat:Physics stubs and Cat:Relativity, to make it easier to find. In any case, if you're wondering why the category has been changed, that's why.
BTW, I don't know if its still the case, but some older browsers had a bit of problem with animated gifs on Wikipedia in the past. It may not still be an issue, but if there's any complaints about it it may need to be changed to a stationary icon. Grutness...wha? 13:23, 3 September 2005 (UTC)
- If the image works for me when I read Wikipedia using IE on a Mac (not the most stable of combinations!), then I don't think there will any real problems. As to the category, it wasn't so much the instructions being misread, it was the meta-template used to add information to the category that caused the slight glitch. And we at WP:WSS really should write down naming guidelines for categories somewhere! Grutness...wha? 13:47, 3 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] removing edits from "cosmological predictions"
Hi Mpatel,
Why did you remove my edits from "cosmological predictions" section? What did you consider "controversial" in them? Did you consider anything untrue in my edits?
I think it's a role of Wikipedia to inform impartially about everything. E.g. despite that I don't like creation of energy from nothing, I've left all those cosmological prediction that follow from this assumption intact because I can't prove that energy can't be created from nothing. But neither you can prove that it can so by the same reasoning you shouldn't remove my edits. Jim 10:25, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Email?
Hi, M, it seems I didn't get your email. Did you send it from your old account? I know my filter passes mail from that account. Can you resend it? I want to discuss something with you by email. CH (talk) 17:55, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] GR and QM
Maptel -
Back on May 30, you added to the History of general relativity page a remark that QM assumes the existance of "a fixed (flat) spacetime background". Can you give me a reference for that? That issue is of some interest to me. --EMS | Talk 03:10, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Relativity stub modification?
Hi, M,
As you probably have noticed, wikiservice is too slow in recent weeks and days to get much done, and in fact right now (today) my ISP is too slow in general to get much done. I hope that with their 200K, Wikimedia will be able to purchase whatever they need to speed up service so I can edit more efficiently. If you know who to contact to ask about this, please do so, since I'd like some feedback from someone on the ground over there (Wikimedia) about the reasons for the slowdown I've seen since I joined. May have much to do with new software which apparently has had some problems.
Service permitting, as soon as possible I want to get back to creating a proper set of project pages. I'd like the relativity stub to point users at the main project page, and I'd like to formulate and add a carefully worded statement that we encourage everyone to correct natural language typos, spelling and grammar, but not numerical factors in equations, etc., unless they really know what they are doing, and to refrain from major edits unless they have genuine expertise. I found a link to an essay by none other than Larry Sanger on the problems which arise from alleged disrespect of expertise on Wikipedia (fortunately, I have not seen too much of that yet, and hope this doesn't change).
My idea is that we can then create a buncha stubs to blue all those red links. This should help greatly in the reorganization of the gtr related categories which I have mentioned on my talk pages and elsewhere. (I also need to explain my vision better in the WikiProject policy statement, and I need to mention this in the talk page for the WikiProject draft so I can get more feedback).
What do you think? If you like the idea, don't make the changes right away, since I need to improve the WikiProject pages and move them to their final home outside my User pages before we announce the project publically.
BTW, so far we only have four members. User:ErkDemon has been active in these pages lately but declined without explanation to join the project, which is unfortunate.---CH (talk) 21:22, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Carl Hewitt
Hi, M, we have a problem with User:CarlHewitt. Can you see User_talk:Hillman/Wikiproject_GTR_draft#Carl_Hewitt?
- Re your comment- " if they travel in parallel paths, that doesn't necessarily mean they are at rest" I disagree. You could have 3-parallelism of the velocity directions, but to apply geodesic deviation you need the speeds to match (initially, before "deviating"); i.e. you need parallel 4-velocities on neighboring geodesics. You are probably thinking in 3 dimensions. Carrionluggage 06:58, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Email
Hi, MP, check your email. I think I just fixed the problem (careless error on my part).---CH (talk) 15:32, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] GR power group
Dear Mpatel,
thanks for your message. It would be a pleasure to join your GR club but unfortunately time limitations don't allow me to do such things right now. Wishing you the best,
Lubos
[edit] Language ordering; thanks!
My apologies for undoing the order that you set for the langauges on General relativity. It seemed that it must have been a mistake, and I couldn't see much logic behind the order given just the two-letter codes. Now I get it. :) Thanks for straightening that out! —HorsePunchKid→龜 07:56, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thank you for not removing the 8 \pi G / c^4 in GR.
actually that was removed from the EFE section and i had returned a simple reference to it in the EFE section. to me, since the EFE is compact enough in appearance so that the use of κ seems not important to me. but what do i know? best, r b-j 12:39, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
