Mozart and the Whale

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mozart and the Whale is a (2005) motion picture starring Josh Hartnett and Radha Mitchell and is the story of two people with Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, whose emotional dysfunction impacts their relationship. It is a fictional account, using characters loosely based on the real-life relationship of Jerry Newport and Mary Meinel (now Mary Newport).

This film is set for a world premiere at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in hopes of finding a distributor. It will be available for purchase on DVD on December 12, 2006.

The screenplay was written by Ron Bass, who was also involved with the production of Rain Man, another movie about an individual with an autistic spectrum disorder.

Parts of this film were shot on the beautiful campus of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

[edit] Reception

The reception received from individuals with Asperger's Syndrome varied. Ron Bass appears, in the opinion of some individuals, to have transplanted his "Rain Man" character onto every character in the film who is autistic, with offensive results.[citation needed]
